Gratitude, Generosity, and Wise Vigilance This Autumn

As autumn arrives and the leaves begin to change, it’s a natural time to reflect on the many things we’re grateful for—whether it’s health, family, opportunity, or the supportive communities we build and belong to. In my work as a wealth advisor, I’m reminded that gratitude often inspires us to look after others and remain alert to the challenges that can impact those we care about.

This season is also an important time to be wise and vigilant. Financial scams continue to increase in both frequency and sophistication, targeting people from all walks of life. The damage isn’t just financial; the emotional toll can be significant, affecting confidence and wellbeing.

I recently listened to a moving episode of the AARP podcast The Perfect Scam, in which two survivors, Dee and Mike, shared their journeys from being scammed to volunteering and supporting others through the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline. Their experiences offer powerful lessons:

  • Empathy and Recovery: The emotional impact of being scammed—feelings of shame and isolation—can be overwhelming. These survivors found that real healing started when they reached out for help, showing us that seeking support is a wise and courageous decision.
  • Giving Back: By helping others, Dee and Mike found greater healing themselves. Supporting and listening to those in need can be just as transforming for the helper as for the person being helped.
  • There’s No Shame: Scams can happen to anyone, regardless of background or financial knowledge. Vigilance and compassion—toward ourselves and others—are key.
  • Practical Actions: Taking a pause, verifying urgent requests, consulting with trusted advisors, and using resources like helplines can prevent losses and provide peace of mind.

If you or someone you know ever faces a suspicious situation or has questions, consider reaching out. Remember: you’re never alone, and reaching out to trusted professionals is a strong first step towards resolution and confidence.

Let’s embrace autumn with gratitude for what we have, openness to helping others, and a strong commitment to wise financial habits.
