“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt
Whether in our marriage, finances, or personal achievements, having a mentor can be an invaluable way to navigate towards our full potential.
Eleanor is right; we don’t have time to learn the hard way with everything. Success leaves clues, so make time to engage a wise counselor, someone who may not tell us exactly what to do but can shine a light on what is possible for us to do – sometimes, it’s right there in front of us. We just need that mentor, someone who has achieved what we aspired to, to show us the way forward. At times, we are too close to see the path ourselves, like reading the label from inside the jar – we need that wise outside perspective.
In a way, mentorship is like parenting. If you’re a parent, then you’ve likely had someone parent you. It’s just the way parenting works. You can have a parent and be a parent at the same time. The same holds true for mentoring. We can benefit from mentorship in two ways.
First, pick an area of your life that you would like to improve and then seek guidance from someone you admire in that area. Then, pay it forward by keeping your radar up for someone open to your wisdom. You’ll get to experience the other side of the coin, pay it forward and you may be surprised at how fulfilling it can be to be a mentor yourself.
“No matter how successful I’ve been, I’ve always had coaching.”
— Michael Jordan
